Gender Equality Awareness Campaign
In December 2006, Bromsgrove
District Council published its first Gender Equality Scheme ahead
of the legislative timetable.
Subsequently the legislation changed. We recognised that as well as
needing to correct the legal requirements described in the Scheme,
there had been relatively little input from the community to the
aims and objectives set out in the first Gender Equality Scheme. A
short term working group of community members and partner
organisations was convened to rewrite the Scheme. This work was
carried out over an 18 month period and the Scheme was re-published
on 6th March 2009.
The revised Draft Scheme made a commitment to a Gender Equality
Awareness Campaign in late 2009 to raise awareness of the Scheme,
to promote equality between men and women and to raise awareness of
trans-gender individuals and their needs to access employment,
services and facilities.
The main focus of the Campaign was to consult widely on a new
District Council policy,
“Sports and Leisure - Services and Facilities Access for Trans
People”
. This policy will provide guidance to staff on how to deal
with requests for access to services and facilities from
transitional individuals.
The Campaign started in November 2009 and concluded in
March 2010 with various awareness raising sessions and
training for Council staff and elected Members and drop in sessions
for the public. The Consultation on the Sports and Leisure Access
policy started on 23rd September 2009 at the last Community
Consultation Conference and closed on 31st March 2010.
