Equality Act 2010

This section of the Council's website will hold information and links to other areas of the website which will demonstrate how Bromsgrove District Council is complying with statutory duties laid down in the Equality Act 2010 and in The Equality Act 2010 (Specific Duties) regulations 2011.

The Public Sector (Single Equality) duties with which the Council seeks to comply at all times are as follows :-

The General Duty

The General Duty has three aims: it requires public bodies to have due regard to the need to:

  • eliminate unlawful discrimination, harassment and victimisation and other conduct prohibited by the Equality Act 2010
  • advance equality of opportunity between people who share a protected characteristic and those who do not; and
  • foster good relations between people who share a protected characteristic and those who do not

The Specific Duties

By 31st January 2012 (and subsequently annually) public bodies must publish information to demonstrate it’s compliance with the three aims of the General Duty across their functions.

This could include information (on equality) relating to employees and others (such as service users) affected by their policies. The available information about staff who work for Bromsgrove District Council as at 31st December 2011 can be downloaded here.

By 6th April 2012 (and subsequently every four years) public bodies must publish at least one or more equality objectives that will help to further the aims of the General Duty – they must be specific and measurable.

In June 2011, Bromsgrove District Council held it's fourth Community Consultation Conference and published a Conference report. To view that report click on this link here. Arising from the Conference report, an action points template has been developed to track the aspirations and actions arising from the Conference report. You can access this template here. This will be updated every three months with further information on the actions. These are reported to and scrutinised by the Bromsgrove Equality and Diversity Forum. For more information about the Forum and their programme of meetings click on this link here.

From the action points template the Bromsgrove Equality and Diversity Forum has agreed a set of Draft Equality Objectives which cover all areas of equality and support the continuance of the involvement and scrutiny of the community in the achievement of these objectives. You can download these objectives here. These objectives may be updated from time to time and achievements and outcomes will be published as appropriate.

The Specific Duties also require that all information is published in a way that is accessible to the public. Every effort is made to make all our information as accessible to the public as possible. The Council operates a procedure for all departments to get advice and support when dealing with the provision of information to the public and for actioning requests for information in accessible formats. Any member of the public can request information in any of the available accessible formats by using our on line request form. You can access this request form by clicking here.
