Disabled Person Reduction
A Council Tax reduction is available if you, or someone
who lives with you, are disabled and you, or they, require more
space, or a special room, because of the disability.
If the reduction is granted, you will pay Council Tax based on
the valuation band below the one that your home has been placed
in.
For example :-
- if your home is in Council Tax valuation band B and you were to
be awarded the reduction, you would pay the band A charge.
- if your home is in band A, your reduction would be 1/9th of the
band D charge.
Who qualifies?
The person must be substantially and permanently
disabled and one of the following must apply:
- an extra bathroom or kitchen is provided to meet their
needs;
- extra space for a wheelchair if they need to use a wheelchair
inside;
- a room that is mainly used to meet their needs.
How do I apply?
You need to fill in our application form
When we receive this form, we will contact you to arrange for
someone to visit your property.
We may also contact your doctor, occupational therapist or
social worker.
If we visit your home we will be carrying identification showing
our name and our job title. You should always ask to see this
identification before letting someone into your home.
Does your income affect this reduction?
No, your income does not affect this reduction, but we will
need to confirm each year that your circumstances haven't
changed.
