What Happens If I Don't Pay
If you do not pay your Business Rates on time we are
required by law to send you documents telling you that your
payments are late and letting you know what will happen if you
don’t pay.
The document could be a reminder, a final notice or a summons.
If you receive one of these documents do not ignore it.
If the payment is not made then we will take the action
mentioned in the letter.
If you are having difficulties paying you should contact us
straight away, we may be able to help. Information on what to
do if you are having trouble paying can be found on the What to do if You
Can't Pay pages.
If you have received a summons then, unless you pay the balance
of the summons in full including the costs, we will ask the court
to grant a liability order.
The liability order will give us further powers to recover the
Business Rates from you.
These powers include:
- To place a charge on your home. (Sole Traders.
Partnerships)
- To make you bankrupt/winding up of your company.
- To instruct Bailiffs to remove your goods to pay the
debt.
