Local sport project reaches BBC awards
final
A Bromsgrove District Council sports project
is hoping to scoop top prize after reaching the BBC Midlands’ Power
of Sport Awards final next month.
The ‘Keep on Moving’ project for people with
disabilities is competing for the BBC Power of Sport Award, made to
one sports project or initiative that is making a real impact and
involving the local community.
Keep on Moving provides people with
disabilities opportunities to engage in a wide variety of sports
and activities. It focuses on what participants can do whilst
supporting them when they struggle, and it caters for all types of
disability, with participants having physical, learning and sensory
impairments.
The project includes community swim sessions
and a Boccia club at Chadsgrove School and Specialist Sports
College, and a multi sport club and dance classes at the Dolphin
Centre.
Evidence submitted by Bromsgrove District
Council in support of the entry for the award includes:
- The Boccia Boars club is Worcestershire’s first adult Boccia
club to enter the National Disability Boccia League.
- The multi-sport club will be one of the first in Worcestershire
to achieve the new Clubmark accreditation from the English
Federation of Disability Sport.
- The "Funshine" Festival, Bromsgrove’s new adult disability
festival, was a great success, donating £104 to Caudwell Children’s
charity.
Last week the project was visited by a BBC
camera crew to meet some participants and carers and to film
footage in advance of the awards evening, which takes place at the
Mailbox in Birmingham on Tuesday December 1 hosted by Nick
Owen.
Bromsgrove District Council portfolio holder
for elderly and vulnerable Cllr. Margaret Sherrey said: “Getting
through to the finals of this award shows us that the Keep on
Moving project is having a real effect in the community. This is
due in no small part to the hard work of all the coaches and
participants who have made the clubs such friendly, welcoming
environments for all that attend.
“The recognition of reaching the final means
that, whatever the result, people living with disabilities across
Bromsgrove can take encouragement from their Council working to
improve opportunities on their behalf.”
The Keep on Moving project also works with the
University of Worcester, MENCAP and SCOPE to provide local
volunteers with the opportunity to gain experiences as sports
coaches.
