New start for old furniture

Recycle for Brom logoUnwanted but perfectly useable furniture will be recycled and reused in a 6 month trial project from Bromsgrove District and Worcestershire County Councils.

The Councils have joined forces in Bromsgrove district in a bid to divert good furniture away from landfill and back into circulation, and promote the re-use of waste within the district.

Beginning on April 1st, residents can now say if their unwanted items collected by the “bulky household waste” service from Bromsgrove District Council are suitable for reuse. If so, staff will then collect as normal and offer the items to “NewStarts”, a charity in Sidemoor that aims to help local people with some of the most pressing difficulties they find themselves confronting, including furnishing a home. If items are not deemed suitable for reuse, they will simply be disposed of as normal.

The NewStarts charity is in constant need of beds, mattresses, wardrobes, tables of all shapes and sizes, chairs, settees and 3-piece suites. To be reused, items must be in a good, clean condition and any soft furnishing will need a fire retardant label.

To donate to NewStarts you can call the charity direct on 01527 882410 and arrange delivery of your items. You can also call Bromsgrove District Council on 01527 881288 and for a nominal fee we can pick up and deliver the items to NewStarts on your behalf.

A number of different agencies including housing associations and social services refer residents to NewStarts, and in addition anyone is welcome to visit the Sidemoor project in Willow Road to buy good quality, second hand items for a fraction of the usual price.

Bromsgrove District Council portfolio holder for Community Services Cllr Mike Webb said: “Charitable projects like NewStarts help us as a council to deliver our objectives of waste minimisation and re-use, while at the same time supporting real social needs in our immediate environment. The voluntary and community sector is an important part of our society, and I am pleased that Bromsgrove District Council is working in partnership with the county council to trial this valuable local project.”

Book your bulky household waste collections by contacting the Bromsgrove Customer Service Centre on 01527 881288, or go to the Waste pages in the Community and Living section of
