New sports opportunities for children with disabilities
Disabled children and their families in
Bromsgrove District will have access to more activities in 2012 as
the District Council expands sports and leisure opportunities for
young people.
An expanded programme which will include new
or improved wheelchair basketball, trampolining, junior boccia and
tricycling will be available to young people in the district aged
from 5 to19 with a variety of disabilities.
The activities are set to be delivered through
a range of organisations working in partnership with Bromsgrove
District Council’s sports development team, which secured £4,782 of
funding to support the services from Worcestershire County
Council.
Bromsgrove District Council’s
portfolio holder for community services, older people, the young
and vulnerable people Cllr Margaret Sherrey said:
“Bromsgrove deserves its good reputation for inclusive sports, and
we continue to develop and expand provision for young people with
disabilities and their families. The continuing popularity of the
established clubs shows the high demand for these services across
the district.”
Under the programme, a trampolining club will
be set up for students at Rigby Hall school, a junior section will
be developed at the Bromsgrove Boars Boccia club, there will be
more opportunities for Bromsgrove Blaze’s Wheelchair Basketball at
the Ryland Centre and the popular trike bikes project in Sanders
Park will be extended to The Ryland Centre so that the trikes will
be available all year round.
In addition, a project with Bromsgrove &
Redditch Hate Crime Partnership will also be developed to encourage
young people with disabilities to enjoy Taekwondo sessions
alongside workshops to speak out about bullying.
