Energy ratings

Here's information on European Union (EU) energy ratings for appliances, boilers and windows, to assist you with identifying and purchasing energy efficient items to save you energy and money!

Energy efficient appliances

Updating your old washing machine or fridge could save you money and reduce your CO2 emissions at home.

Across the European Union, household appliances carry energy labels, rated their efficiency from A to G. A is the most efficient, G the least efficient. For refrigerators the labelling system goes up to A++ .

EU law requires that energy efficiency labels are displayed on all refrigeration appliances, electric tumble dryers, washing machines, washer dryers, dishwashers, electric ovens, air conditioners, lamps and light bulb packaging.

The most efficient products also carry the Energy Saving Recommended logo, making it a quick and easy way for you to identify the most energy efficient products in the category.

Energy efficient boilers

Boilers have a rating displayed as the SEDBUK label. SEDBUK stands for Seasonal Efficiency of Domestic Boilers in the UK and provides a basis for fair comparison of different boiler models by arranging boilers into bands according to their efficiency. SEDBUK rates boilers on a scale of A to G, where band A is the most efficient and band G the least.

Here is a typical example of a rating label to show you what to look out for when buying a new boiler for your home.

Energy efficient windows

The BRFC Window Energy Rating is a voluntary scheme used by the glazing industry, in which the whole window (the frame and the glass) is assessed on its efficiency at retaining heat.

The BFRC Window Energy Rating contains bands from A to G, where A is the most efficient and G the least.
