Bags Xmas

It’s starting to feel a lot like Christmas in Bromsgrove now that the very first Christmas Market is coming to town this weekend.

Bromsgrove District Council, in partnership with Friends of St John’s, are bringing the market to the town’s event space on Friday 20th and Saturday 21st November combined with the annual light switch on event.

The two day event, which opens at 10am each day, will see festively decorated market stalls offering a huge variety of crafts, Christmas goodies and food, as well as entertainment throughout the day.

There will be an opening ceremony at 11am on Friday 20th which will be attended by Sajid Javid, Chairman Cllr Caroline Spencer and other local dignitaries. During this ceremony the ‘best dressed window’ in the High Street will be announced.

Close to thirty businesses have signed up for stalls and a final list has now been selected to offer residents a range of goods to peruse over the course of the two days. Some businesses will be there for just one day, whilst others have opted to cover both days meaning there will be plenty of variety across the 24 stalls.

Friends of St John’s Chairman Jo Slade said: “We were both excited and amazed at the response we had to offering stalls at the Christmas Market and thank you to everyone who applied. The Market has already gone from having 14 stalls to 24 so hopefully it will be a big hit with both the traders and visitors to the town centre.”

Stall holders showing their wares at the market include:

  • Lilac Elephant, who make unusual fabric gifts such as quilted advent calendars and tree decorations,
  • Ian Felton who sells high quality, Oak serving platters,
  • Wychbold Fudge who hand make their own delicious unique flavoured fudge,
  • RAW Artwork who create customised bespoke wall art and
  • Puddleducks, who design and make handmade Christmas Cards and gifts.

There are several charities also putting on stalls to sell fund raising Christmas cards and offer information to visitors, including St Basil's and Willow's Hedgehogs.

Cllr Rod Laight, whose portfolio covers leisure and cultural services, said: “We are so pleased to be working with Friends of St John’s to put on the very first Christmas Market in the town. Christmas is coming early to Bromsgrove and there’s going to be plenty for visitors to get involved in to start the celebrations! Come on down at the weekend and get into the Christmas spirit!”

Jo added: “There really is going to be a wide range of goods on offer. The purpose of the market is to support local businesses, charities and our local community in Bromsgrove as well as bringing some festive cheer!”

Food and drink stalls will also be provided by local businesses including a BBQ and cocktails from the Slug and Lettuce, cakes and muffins from Lorita’s Bakehouse, freshly cooked pizza on the High Street from Pizza Heaven and mulled wine, hot chocolate and other refreshments from other providers.

The Christmas Light Switch On will take place on the Saturday in its old spot outside the Golden Cross Pub, with entertainment from 3.30pm, the switch being flipped at 5.30pm and a special visit from Father Christmas and his merry helpers.

The normal Market will be running alongside the festive market from 8.45am on both days.
