Fly Tip

A Bromsgrove man has paid £300 after admitting responsibility for a fly tip that was investigated by Bromsgrove District Council.

The resident, who cannot be named for legal reasons, admitted failing to dispose of their waste legally and paid a £300 Fixed Penalty Notice for a fly tip of garden waste in the Stoke Prior area.

The money will go directly into new increased efforts to combat fly tipping in the district.

Depending on the severity of the offence magistrates’ courts can hand out up to £50,000 fines or 12 months imprisonment for fly-tipping, rising to an unlimited fine and 5 years imprisonment in a Crown Court.

Cllr Peter Whittaker, whose portfolio covers environmental services, said: “We’re all required to ensure our waste is disposed of properly and just like littering, fly tipping isn’t only illegal, it wrecks our environment and costs us all money for the council to clean it up. We’re stepping up our efforts to fight this blight on our communities.”

The district council has had to spend around £10,000 removing 254 fly tips from public land since January, ranging from small ‘household’ type loads of waste to larger environmental crimes. Enforcement officers are now using a new mixture of community education and direct action to identify and prosecute people responsible for fly-tipping.

Cllr Whittaker added: “If you have waste to dispose of you can find out more online at, or contact the district council for advice.”

Everyone remains legally responsible for their waste even when someone else takes it away. If your waste is taken away, getting a receipt for it in the form of a proper waste transfer note from a registered waste carrier helps prove that you have carried out your duty of care. To check that a waste carrier is registered, search online for ‘Environment Agency public registers’ or contact the Environment Agency on 03708 506 506.
