Three new courses of the popular running course for absolute beginners, Couch to 5k, are starting in Bromsgrove District.

Anyone that wants to ditch the couch and start running can become able and confident to run five kilometres over the nine-week courses, which have become popular since they were introduced to the area by Bromsgrove District Council in 2013.

The weekly sessions are led by professionals and supported by the NHS, and include a series of downloadable podcasts designed to structure each run with music and coaching to develop running technique, speed and stamina progressively over time, as well as a companion smartphone app.

The new courses, which are all £1 a session, start from Monday September 11. They’re on Mondays at 6pm at Lickey End Recreation Ground, Wednesdays at 6pm at Sanders Park meeting at the bandstand, and Thursdays at 6pm at Catshill Meadow.

Cllr Peter Whittaker, Bromsgrove District Council’s portfolio holder for Leisure, said: “We’ve been supporting these groups for a few years now and they are very popular. Many people have surprised themselves and found that couch to 5k was the kick start that helped them ease into the more active lifestyle they wanted.”

Many graduates from local Couch to 5k groups go on to join local running groups, including parkrun, and continue a new healthier lifestyle.

Bromsgrove District Council is developing Couch to 5k to create more local opportunities for active leisure. Regular brisk exercise can help reduce the risk of chronic illnesses such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes and stroke, boost mood and control weight.
