Last night Bromsgrove District Council’s Cabinet agreed to recommend to the full Council that it should not fund the creation of a Sports Hall in the town.

After the meeting Cllr Peter Whittaker, whose Portfolio covers Leisure, said: “We have now given all due consideration to the creation of a Sports hall in the town centre.

“We have listened to feedback from our residents and studied current usage numbers, but it is clear it is not a financially viable option.

“We are committed to sport and leisure provision throughout the District as a whole – and will continue to work with all sports clubs across the district as we currently do.

“I hope our residents continue to enjoy our new sports and leisure centre and our multi sports activities which we are running throughout the Summer.”

Cllr Brian Cooper, whose portfolio covers Finance said: “The report is clear that even pursuing an option with a soft play area included in the design, would see the Council not creating enough income to recover the costs of borrowing required to fund the Sports Hall.

“Therefore we would be forced to find additional monies from the Council’s reserves.

“We understand the views of a certain sector of our community but my Cabinet colleagues and I are determined to maintain existing council services in the years to come despite the uncertain financial situation in local government over the next few years.

"So it would be irresponsible for Bromsgrove Council to take on a significant extra financial burden at this time".
