Market Bag

Bromsgrove’s historic market has bagged an idea to reduce plastic soup and stall-holders are urging shoppers to jump on board too.

The District Council has secured funding to produce tote bags which market sellers can give out to customers who spend more than a pound on their goods.

To receive a stock of them the traders have signed a pledge that they will not give out plastic bags in the future and ask their customers to reuse and bring their own.

The campaign starts on Tuesday September 17 to support Zero Waste month.

Council Leader Karen May, whose portfolio covers the Town Centre, said: “This Council is signed up to making the District more green and we are already working on electric car charging point provision and growing community gardens, to name but two initiatives.

“Now, with the support of our market traders, we can encourage the hundreds of visitors to our High Street each day, to stop using single-use plastic and instead they can use our tote bags to shop in style!”
