Council Tax Benefit

Council Tax Benefit is a means tested benefit that is intended to help towards the Council Tax you are liable to pay on a property that is treated as your main residence.  It does not matter if you already receive a discount, such as single person discount or disabled relief, on your Council Tax account.  Council Tax Benefit is governed by Primary legislation including The Social Security Contributions and Benefits Act 1992, the Council Tax Benefit Regulations 2006 and the Council Tax Benefit (Persons who have attained the qualifying age for state pension credit) Regulations 2006.  It is normally administered, along with Housing Benefit and second adult rebate, by the local authority in whose area the property lies.
