100 Step Ups!
Bromsgrove District Council’s Step Up Private Tenancy
Scheme has now helped 100 households to secure properties in the
private rented sector.
Kenny Hathaway was the 100th tenant
to be successful on the scheme which helps residents who are in
housing need, can afford to privately rent but need extra help with
securing a property.
Through the scheme they are able to apply to
borrow money for their first month’s rent and have the deposit
guaranteed by the Council after receiving support and assistance in
securing suitable and affordable properties in the private
sector.
Kenny moved into his 1 bedroom flat on
Charford last week.
He said: “I am so pleased with my new flat and
am looking forward to making it home. The Step Up Scheme has
been a great help and I would not have been able to get my own
place without their help.”
Kenny’s new landlord Pete and Kim Richardson
have let a number of their private properties through the scheme
and are happy with the service they have received
Pete said: “The Step Up Scheme works really
well for us, and we have had a number of great tenants who with the
help and support of the scheme have been really happy in our
properties.”
The scheme which has been running for over 3
years has proved more popular than ever in the last 12 months.
Housing Initiatives Officer Jennifer Delorenzo
who runs the Step Up Scheme on behalf of Bromsgrove District
Council said: “We have seen a real surge in interest in the last
year, where we are helping more people.
“This is due in part to the improved
relationship we have developed with the private sector, raising its
profile within the district, but also is due to the fact that we
are seeing more people in housing need.”
