Work to make Mill Lane safe begins
The privately-owned
stretch of Mill Lane in Bromsgrove town centre is being resurfaced
after the owner responded to requests from the District Council to
make the area safe.
Work by Leaders Refurbishment LLP on behalf of
owners Dragon Retail Properties Limited to replace the cracked and
uneven paving slabs began on Monday March 8.
Hardwearing standard paving slabs, similar to
those on adjacent Worcestershire County Council Highways areas, are
set to be used.
The contractors are entitled to permission
from local Councils to fence off the area to complete the works,
and to ensure access for vehicles and equipment from the bus
station end. The District Council has requested that these
essential works minimise obstruction to shops.
District Council officers had been involved in
complex attempts to get agents of the owners of the street to fix
the surface for several months, and Cllr Ted Tibby is delighted
that people will finally be able to walk safely on it.
“I’m very glad that people will be able to
walk safely on this street, now that the whole episode seems to be
coming to an end,“ said Cllr Tibby. “It’s been a frustrating time
for us, held responsible for a street we couldn’t mend that belongs
to a private company, and I congratulate the officers that stuck to
the job of chasing a solution to the problem. I am satisfied that
the owner of the street finally realised that we had a potentially
serious problem.”
