Heritage Open Day comes to Bromsgrove
Learn local heritage and dig for buried treasure at a
National Heritage Open Day event on Bromsgrove High Street this
week.
From 10.00am-1.00pm on Friday September 10,
visitors will be able to hunt for buried treasure in an archaeology
sandpit, and also find out more about the history of the area from
an archaeologist and District Council Conservation officer who will
be on hand for local heritage questions.
Bromsgrove District Council’s portfolio holder
for Planning and Regeneration Cllr Jill Dyer said: “Our
Conservation officer has organised this event in town to support
English Heritage’s open days, and we’re pleased to be promoting
local history.
“It should be a bit of fun to dig around
looking for buried bones, and residents and visitors to the town
alike will have the opportunity to find out more about the heritage
of the area as our Conservation officer will be available.”
The event is a result of Bromsgrove District
Council teaming up with Worcestershire County Council to host an
event as part of this year’s English Heritage National Heritage
Open Days.
Emma Hancox, the County Council's Historic
Environment Record Manager said: "We've held sessions like this
before and they have always been really popular, and I hope this
one will also be enjoyed. It’s a great chance for people to find
out about the fascinating archaeology of Bromsgrove and for young
children to get involved with local history. I encourage anyone to
come on down to the High Street on the day and find out something
new about the local area."
National Heritage Open Days run each year for
four days in September and are intended to celebrate England’s
fantastic architecture and culture by offering free access to
properties that are usually closed to the public or normally charge
for admission. Heritage venues throw open their doors for a chance
to discover architectural treasures and enjoy a range of tours,
events and activities that bring local history and culture to
life.
