Campaign targets ‘awful’ fly tipping
Residents may have seen some ‘Pretty Awful’ images on
waste collection vehicles in Bromsgrove recently as part of a
campaign to reduce fly tipping.
The campaign was launched by Bromsgrove
District Council last month to encourage residents and businesses
to play their part to keep the district looking at its best.
It is usually committed by someone who is not
registered to take away waste from businesses or households and
last year fly tipping cost the council and tax payers £102,000.
Cllr Michael Webb, whose Portfolio covers
waste, said “Fly tipping is illegal, hazardous and blights our
countryside. We all have a responsibility to make sure we only use
people who are legally registered to deal with waste to take it
away for us. If your rubbish is found in a fly tip you can be held
responsible for the fine.
“The campaign should act as a reminder, to
both residents and businesses, that it is unacceptable behaviour
and hopefully make people more conscientious about this issue.”
All businesses in the district are legally
responsible for the waste they produce and its subsequent disposal.
Bromsgrove District Council officers will be carrying out random
spot checks on businesses to ensure they have their waste contract
agreement in place so they don’t become liable to a £300 fine.
Bromsgrove residents can use the household
waste in Quantry Lane, Romsley to get rid of excess waste. To
request a bulky waste collection or to report any incidents of
fly-tipping call 01527 881288.
To ensure the waste service you are using is
legally registered, you can verify with the Environment Agency on
