The Data Protection Act (1998) protects your privacy and ensures that any personal data about you held by us is processed lawfully and in accordance with eight principles.

The term ‘personal data’ refers to information that can be used to identify a living individual.  Personal data can be stored either electronically or on paper and can include details such as:

  • Your name, address, date of birth, health, financial details
  • Other less obvious information the Council may hold about you, for example: that you have a brown waste bin or CCTV footage.

The term processing means storing, viewing, adapting, retrieving, collecting, disclosing, deleting -  in fact doing anything at all with personal data.

We are registered as a data controller with the Information Commissioner. You can read more about the register here . As a council, we may legally collect and process personal data about you so that we can:

  • Provide you with services you need
  • Fulfil our functions as a local authority
  • Maintain a record of services that we provide

We take our responsibilities seriously and make every effort to be open and fair about how we use your personal data. When we ask you to provide information about yourself, you will find a statement on our forms that explains who we are, the purpose(s) for processing and anything else you need to know about how we process your personal data.

If we need to process your personal data for a purpose required by law e.g. to provide a statutory function such as processing your council tax, we do not need your consent.  If we need to process your personal data for another purpose e.g. mailing you with information about local events, we will need your consent.
