Hunnington Parish Council

Welcome

The tiny village of Hunnington runs mainly along the B.4551 Bromsgrove Road on the edge of the West Midlands, bordering Halesowen, Rubery and our neighbouring parish of Romsley. It is also surrounded by beautiful countryside with the Clent Hills, which is National Trust land, being nearby. There are miles of public footpaths leading from within the village and a notice board showing a map of footpaths available is situated on the Bromsgrove Road near to Redhill Place. Walkers come from far afield to take advantage of the wonderful scenery that is available. Halesowen Wildlife Group maintains a hide at Bibbey's Hollow and 'twitchers' (bird watchers) come from all over to catch a glimpse of the many different birds that frequent this area.

The parish is essentially rural and it remains a priority of the Parish Council that this and the green belt contained within are guarded and protected for everyone.

Agriculture remains the main industry in the village with there being eight farms of arable, sheep and cattle, including Horsepool Farm with its world famous pedigree herd. There is also Blue Bird Park where the Vincent family made the original blue bird toffee from the beginning of the 1920's until 1999 when manufacture was transferred elsewhere. This park now sees other businesses operating within its confines but the magnificent pillared entrance is still a sight to see. The Balmoral petrol station and garage selling Rolls Royce cars is also sited on the B.4551 Bromsgrove Road in the village.

Hunnington has a very varied range of houses including a park homes site and houses originally built by the Vincent family for its workers.

There is The Sun public house on the main road, which offers a warm welcome to locals and visitors.

Hunnington shares many activities and local groups with our neighbouring parish of Romsley such as the Brownies, Girl Guides, Cubs, Scouts, Women's Institute, Kenelmstowe Pantomime Group, White Heather Club, History Society, the Annual Parish Show and the local Art Group. There is also the Hunnington and Romsley Cricket and Bowling Club, which is based in Hunnington.

Children attend Romsley St. Kenelm's Church of England School the local primary school under the headship of Mrs. H. Gommersall, and then go on to schools in Hagley. A pre-school nursery is also sited within the grounds of St. Kenelm's.

Hunnington comes within the parochial parish of Romsley and the two churches available for worship are St. Kenelm's Church of England and Romsley Methodist Church.

The Council

Parish Councils are the elected first-tier of local government and are controlled by law. As an essential part of local democracy they are granted powers to use the precept which is the Council's share of the council tax, for the benefit of its Parish. The first elected Parish Council of Hunnington was in 1895 under the Local Government Act 1894 and it remains a commitment of its present day members to represent the interests of the community fully.

The Parish Council consisting of 7 Councillors meets by monthly, usually on the third Tuesday, beginning in January of each year, in the offices of Solus Garden & Leisure, Bromsgrove Road, Hunnington. A period of fifteen minutes is set aside at the beginning of each meeting to allow residents to raise any issues with the Council.

The Annual Parish Meeting is held in May each year and takes place in Romsley St. Kenelms C. of E. First School, Bromsgrove Road, Romsley. Parishioners are encouraged to attend via an annual newsletter written by the Chairman, which is distributed to each home prior to this meeting. It remains the policy of Hunnington Parish Council to elect a new Chairman every year and this takes place before the meeting begins.
