Food Hygiene
The Commercial Division comprises officers with specialist
knowledge and training in Food/Food Hygiene related matters.
Officers have responsibility for food premises within their
geographical areas, which are ward based. In addition, approved
premises that require particular expertise are assigned to specific
named officers.
Bromsgrove has some 600 food premises including producers,
manufacturers, wholesalers, retailers and caterers. Officers within
the Commercial Division carry out food safety enforcement,
supplemented with contracted inspections of lower risk
premises.
The Food Safety Act Code of Practice requires that all food
premises be categorised according to an inspection rating score.
This determines the frequency of inspections (ranging from 6 months
to 5 years) and is dependent upon the type of food business, the
type of handling or processing undertaken, the hygiene and
structure of the premises and how well risks are controlled.

Officers also carry out investigations relating to complaints
concerning food hygiene issues and respond to requests for
assistance from food proprietors who need advice about their
undertaking.
