Enabling Affordable Housing

Part of the Strategic Housing role at Bromsgrove District Council is to help enable the supply of affordable housing for residents of the district.

Affordable Housing is provided to help those people who would otherwise be unable to buy or rent housing on the open market.

As the council no longer has a housing stock of its own, it now works in partnership with local housing associations to enable the development of new affordable housing sites.

To make this process easier, the Council have selected certain housing associations to work with as their preferred partners.  The process of selecting preferred partners was started in March 2007 where local housing associations were asked to submit an application detailing the way in which their organisation could work in partnership with Bromsgrove District Council.

Those selected are expected to work with the Council to help deliver the following

  • Supporting the actions in the Housing Strategy "Unlocking the Door to Meeting Housing Needs in Bromsgrove District" 2006-2011 and the regional and sub regional housing strategies.
  • Addressing strategic actions and targets by increasing investment in affordable housing through new build, regeneration, remodelling and improvement to the quality of existing housing.
  • Offering increased choice to those in the housing market, including social rented, intermediate, shared ownership, key worker and other housing products if relevant.
  • Creating sustainable communities with excellent services for residents.
  • Assisting the ongoing development of a shared understanding of local and sub-regional housing markets and needs and an ability to respond quickly to changing housing conditions, national/regional requirements and emerging opportunities.
  • Maximising effective use of resources - stock, land and other assets
  • and continually improving service standards and monitoring.

The agreement with the selected partners is subject to review in August 2012 where the Council will consider the effectiveness of this arrangement.  For further information about the process of becoming a preferred partner, please contact the strategic housing team on strategic.housing@bromsgrove.gov.uk or 01527 881288
