Council Tax Hardship Scheme

If you get Council Tax Support and can’t pay your remaining Council Tax due to exceptional circumstances, you can apply for help from our hardship scheme.

Warning Sign Tiny We are currently experiencing a high workload that's impacting on the time it's taking to process benefits.

The amount you receive and the length of time you receive it for depends on your circumstances. It is a limited fund and so we prioritise based on the needs of each applicant.

Hardship payments reduce Council Tax bills, they do not provide cash. If your application is approved, we’ll write to you with all the details and a revised Council Tax bill.

Please apply as soon as possible, as we cannot guarantee that we will be able to backdate hardship fund payments.

If you disagree with our decision

You can write to us to ask us to look at your case again within one calendar month of the date of our decision. We will write to you with our response.

The hardship fund is a discretionary fund, which means you have no entitlement or statutory rights under this scheme and our decisions are final with no right to appeal.

Tell us if your circumstances change

If your circumstances change, you must tell us as soon as possible. You might be committing benefit fraud if you choose not to report a change in circumstances.

Any money that is overpaid to you will usually be added back onto your Council Tax bill.

Please contact us to apply.

You will need to have an interview with us to discuss your circumstances.
