A new Couch to 5k course is starting in September offering novices the chance to take up running.

The popular running course, designed for absolute beginners, has seen many successes previously and will be starting new sessions from Monday 3rd September, throughout the week and various locations across the borough.

Anyone that wants to ditch the couch and start running can become able and confident to run five kilometres over the nine-week course, taking place on:

Mondays: 6pm Lickey End Recreation Ground

Wednesdays: 6pm at Sanders Park

Thursdays: 9.30am at Sanders Park

Sundays: 9.30am at Alvechurch Meadows

Sessions last approximately 45 minutes are PAYG at £1 per session. Anyone is welcome to take part in the Couch to 5k session.

Cllr Peter Whittaker, whose portfolio covers leisure and cultural services, said: “Staying active during the summer can be difficult especially with school holidays, different routines, warm weather and holidays, so this next round is the perfect way to get back to it.

The Couch to 5k courses are specially designed to help people build up their stamina and fitness slowly so that it’s manageable. No matter what your current fitness level is, anyone is welcome to come along and give it a go.”

Many graduates from local Couch to 5k groups go on to join local running groups, including parkrun, and continue a new healthier lifestyle.

Regular brisk exercise can help reduce the risk of chronic illnesses such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes and stroke, boost mood and control weight.
