Work to begin on Sanders Park car park extension

Work to improve and extend the car park at Sanders Park is due to begin in August.

Residents and visitors to Sanders Park are advised that works to extend the current car park will start from Monday 17 August. It is expected to take between six and eight weeks to complete and may cause some disruption for park users during this time.

The project aims to increase parking capacity of the current overflow car park, as well as improving accessibility and enhancing the overall visitor experience at one of the district's most popular parks.

The works will include the excavation of topsoil, new drainage installation, kerb and footpath improvements, resurfacing and the creation of additional parking spaces. Once completed, the car park is expected to provide an additional 23 standard parking bays and 6 disabled bays to the current offering. Final numbers remain subject to change during construction.

While every effort will be made to minimise disruption, visitors should expect some inconvenience while the work is carried out. Construction traffic, noise, dust, and muddy conditions will be unavoidable at certain stages of the project. At times, both visitors and construction vehicles may need to follow a temporary one-way arrangement, that differs from the normal layout of the car park, to exit safely. Traffic management measures will be in place throughout the works and visitors are asked to follow all signage and instructions for their own safety.

Members of the public are also reminded not to enter the construction area at any time, for their own safety.

Parks Portfolio Holder for Bromsgrove District Council, Cllr Shirley Webb, said: "These are exciting improvements for Sanders Park and once completed, the extension will provide significantly more parking capacity, better accessibility, improved footpaths, and enhanced facilities for disabled visitors. These improvements will help make Sanders Park even more welcoming and better able to support the many events and activities that take place here throughout the year.

“We appreciate that these works will cause some temporary disruption for park users and nearby residents, and we would like to thank everyone in advance for their patience and understanding.

"We apologise that the work has to begin towards the end of the school summer holidays. However, parts of the project are heavily dependent on suitable weather conditions. Excavation and earth-moving become much more difficult during wetter periods, while resurfacing work needs warmer temperatures to ensure a durable, long-lasting finish.

"This short-term disruption will have long term benefits for all park users, for many years to come.”

The improvement project is being carried out on behalf of Bromsgrove District Council by contractor Macdonald Surfacing.

Working hours will be restricted to 8am to 5pm on weekdays only, with no evening, overnight or weekend working planned, to reduce the impact on residents and park users.
