Sanders Park Car Park Works
Work to improve and extend the car park at Sanders Park is due to begin in August.
Residents and visitors to Sanders Park are advised that works to extend the current car park will start from Monday 17 August. It is expected to take between six and eight weeks to complete and may cause some disruption for park users during this time.
Why is taking place during the school holiday when it is very busy?
What improvements work are taking place?
There will be increased parking capacity of the current overflow car park, as well as improving accessibility and improving the overall visitor experience.
Works will include the excavation of topsoil, new drainage installation, kerb and footpath improvements, resurfacing and an additional 23 standard parking bays and 6 disabled bays to the current offering
It will take between 6 to 8 weeks to complete and will be completed around early October 2026
- No, please only park in marked bays. Parking on the grass will cause damage to the ground and potentially damage vehicles.
- There are alternative car parks within the town centre a short walk away.
- If parking in surrounding streets, please do not block driveways and be considerate to residents living close by.
Unfortunately, we do have the staff to manage car parking. We would ask that people would be considerate of residents when parking.
We would expect people to walk 15 minutes from parking to a play area, and we have provided a list of alternative car parks within the next question
Please see the table below for drive and walk times for car parks in the vicinity.

Why are trees being removed for the improvement works?
Two trees have had to be removed. One was in the car park area and the other was on the access road and would have damaged the road
What about nesting birds for which the trees are their home?
The trees were inspected for nests immediately before the work took place and no nests were found.
Over 1,000 trees have been planted in the park over the past few years including the black poplar variety.

Please note:
While every effort will be made to minimise disruption, visitors should expect some inconvenience while the work is carried out. Construction traffic, noise, dust, and muddy conditions will be unavoidable at certain stages of the project. At times, both visitors and construction vehicles may need to follow a temporary one-way arrangement, that differs from the normal layout of the car park, to exit safely. Traffic management measures will be in place throughout the works and visitors are asked to follow all signage and instructions for their own safety.
Members of the public are also reminded not to enter the construction area at any time, for their own safety
