Allotment Basics for Beginners
Congratulations on becoming an allotment tenant.
Starting a new plot can feel like a big task, but most successful allotments are developed gradually over time. This page highlights the key information and resources to help you get started.

Before You Begin
Read the Tenancy Agreement
Make sure you understand your responsibilities as a tenant, including cultivation requirements, site rules and plot maintenance expectations.
Check Approved Structures
Before installing a shed, greenhouse, polytunnel or any other structure, please check the Approved Structures guidance to ensure it is permitted.

Your First Year
To establish your plot successfully:
- Start with a manageable area and expand your cultivation gradually.
- Keep weeds under control and maintain paths around your plot.
- Aim to cultivate at least a quarter of your plot within the first six months.
- Work towards bringing the plot into full cultivation within your first year.
- Seek advice from your Site Representative or neighbouring tenants if you need support.

Need Help?
Many allotment tenants begin with little or no gardening experience. Allotments are a great way to learn new skills, meet like-minded people and enjoy growing your own fruit, vegetables and flowers.
Remember, you do not need to do everything at once. A well-maintained allotment is usually built up steadily over time.
