Carers discounts and disregards
Council tax discounts are available for residents who provide care for others.
For the purposes of council tax a care worker is a person who is employed to provide care for someone by a charity or local authority and a carer is unpaid.
Discount for care workers.
If you are a care worker you may be eligible for a Council Tax discount if the following applies to your circumstances.
- you provide support or care for another resident who lives at the same address as you
- you are employed to care for this person by a charity or local authority and they introduced you to the person requiring care
- you earn less than £44 per week
- you work for at least 24 hours a week
- you are a resident at the place where you deliver care or dwell in premises provided to allow best performance of the care work you provide

What happens next?
Please continue to pay the current amount on your bill until your account has been adjusted and we have sent you an official notification a discount has been applied to your account.
Discounts for carers
If you are a carer you may be eligible for a Council Tax discount if the following applies to your circumstances.
- you provide care for someone who lives with you
- you provide care for someone for at least 35 hours a week
The person you care for must be entitled to any of the following:
- an attendance allowance
- the highest or middle rate of the care component of a disability living allowance
- armed forced independence payment
- standard or enhanced rate of the daily living component of personal independence payment
- an increase in the rate of his disablement pension under section 104 of the Social Security Contributions and Benefits Act 1992 by an amount which is the highest amount determined in accordance with paragraph (a) of regulation 19 of the Social Security (General Benefit) Regulations 1982 or, in a case to which paragraph (b) of that regulation applies, the amount determined in accordance with that paragraph
- an increase in a constant attendance allowance under the proviso to article 14 of the Personal Injuries (Civilians) Scheme 1983, or under article 14(1)(b) of the Naval, Military and Air Forces etc. (Disablement and Death) Service Pensions Order 1983 (including that provision as applied, whether with or without modifications, by any other instrument)
The person being cared for is not a spouse, partner or a child under the age of 18.
How to apply
To apply for this discount please complete our application form with evidence of the benefit entitlement for the person you care for who lives with you.

What happens next?
When you have sent us an application for carers discount we will assess whether you meet the eligibility criteria and send you an new bill showing the discount has been applied.
