Frequently asked questions about your waste collection

Black and Green bin: No, Council Tax is a tax and therefore is not a payment for service; therefore, we do not give refunds in situations of service failure.

Your council tax payment contributes to fund a wide variety of services including police fire service, highways, schools, environmental health and leisure facilities, it is not just for waste collection.

  • Monday Bank Holidays: we do not have any scheduled household collections on a Monday
  • Good Friday: collections take place as normal
  • Christmas and New Year: we aim to cause as little disruption as possible by moving only the collections that fall on Christmas Day or Boxing Day. We advertise any such changes extensively, including on this website.

We use our service status page and social media (Facebook and Twitter) to inform residents of any immediate or unexpected changes and ask that wherever possible they inform friends, relatives and neighbours who might not have access to this.

If we are aware of ongoing issues or planned service changes (e.g. over Christmas) we place adverts in a variety of publications including free newspapers, local newsletters, Churches, Children’s centres and parish council publications.

If you are aware of any other local publication that would like to host such messages please let us know

If your bin has not been emptied, it does not always mean that it has been missed. Our collection crews can collect up until 5pm Tuesday to Thursday and 4pm on Fridays, so we may not have reached your property yet.

Other reasons why your bin may not have been emptied include:

  • Collection routes can sometimes change, meaning the crew may arrive at a different time than usual.
  • The collection vehicle may have become full and needed to leave the area to empty its load before returning to complete the round.
  • You may have seen a vehicle collecting a different waste stream, such as garden waste, rather than your scheduled collection.
  • Collections may be delayed due to adverse weather conditions, such as snow or extreme heat.
  • Your bin may not have been emptied if it contains the wrong materials, for example household waste placed in a recycling bin.
  • There may have been an operational issue, vehicle breakdown, or emergency that has affected collections.
  • A road closure or road works that prevents access.

If your bin has still not been emptied after the collection day has ended, please report it as a missed bin collection.
